Friday, December 28, what a lovely way to burn. That was a dilemma I dawdled around for some time. That gap I covered with ImgBurn. However there was a slight drawback with this handy bit of freeware - I could only use it in a profile with administrative privileges. Since I was wont to work in a profile with limited privileges, the need to switch profiles was less than ideal. This not only enabled me to burn bootable discs from ISO images in my limited profile, dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp, but also included a newer version of Sonic myDVD.

The procedure wasn't quite as intuitive as it could be however. It was only after popping out two drink coasters, that I stumbled upon the right way to go about burning an ISO image: look for the 'Burn Image' option on the Roxio Creator home page. Alternatively, choose the 'Burn Image' option under the 'Copy' tab in the left hand navigation. Whatever you do, don't attempt any operation via the 'Data' tab. The 'Data' tab led me on a wild goose chase.

I looked at the available options, scratched my head then retreated to the help file. Here's what I found: Insert a blank disc into the selected drive.

Click on the Make Bootable button in the data disc toolbar. Select Bootable image on hard drive. Click on the Browse button, and navigate to the disc image file using the Select Image dialog box. When you have selected a disc image file, click on the Add button. Click on the OK button to add your selection to the file selection window.

Click on the action button to begin recording data to your disc. Whoops - failed! I got a stark 'Operating system missing' message when I tried to boot form the CD. I thought I'd do better the second time by adjusting a default setting for data discs in the Roxio EMC 9 configuration - "Be sure when you burn your iso image that you burn it "disc-at-once" vs.

Some software Nero defaults to "track-at-once". But it was a red herring. The same grim 'Operating system missing' message loomed up. And leave the default settings. That'll work in limited and administrative profiles, dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp. I know. I tested it. Sunday, December 9, the mystery of the differential backup.

I whiled away an hour or so planning a backup strategy. After consulting a few web sites I decided the best way to go was to start with a normal backup, then schedule a weekly differential backup. The trouble is, I didn't quite know how to set that up.

Top of my list of questions were these: Should the two backups have different names, and should they be in different folders? The arrangement I had previously was to start with a normal backup, then each week append an incremental backup to it.

But now I can't remember - did I give the scheduled incremental backup, the same name as the normal backup? What I want to do now is separate the differential backup from the normal one and to overwrite the differential backup each week with the new one. That will mean I only have to burn dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp differential backup to a rewritable DVD RW each week, rather than the whole, ever-growing, normal-plus-appended-incremental backup bundle.

I think I'll change a file or two, run the differential, and see what happens. Well, what do you know - I followed my gut feeling and it worked! According to www. I eventually worked out how to overwrite just the differential backup, dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp Roxio Creator 9 DE and presumably its predecessor - Sonic RecordNow 7. The key is to load the contents of the rewritable DVD and then to add data.

My first attempt at overwriting the differential backup failed. That was because I "followed my nose" and after inserting the rewritabale DVD, dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp, opened Roxio Creator 9, chose 'Burn Data', clicked 'add data' and browsed for the differential backup file. That method forced me to erase the entire contents of the DVD.

After consulting Roxio's help file, I discovered the crucial role of the 'load data' button. That was the missing step. Now Roxio asks me if I want to replace the differential backup file on the DVD with the file of the same name that I have selected to add.

Of course, I choose yes. The burning of the replacement file is very quick. I'm a happy man. Saturday, December 8, the vices of virtual machines.

There's always something that doesn't work as well, the second time around. You spend a week installing Windows, service packs and updates, restoring backed up data, loading software and tweaking configurations, in the expectation that everything will work more smoothly, and you find that some thing do indeed work better, dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp.

But other things don't. In my case, with this fresh installation, it was the network connections of virtual machines. They run like a dog. In fact Google is the only site they'll successfully display. All other sites time out before any text appears. I don't know. I was surprised to see that the default network connection set by Virtual PC was via the host computer's network adapter - in my case the Netgear WGv2.

I'm sure I had this set to shared networking previously. This is one of those problems I solved in the shower. And that, my friends, is exactly how it panned out.

Restored files and permissions I set up two user accounts - a password protected 'admin' account with administrative privileges and a personal one which I use for day to day stuff. I discovered fairly quickly that in my personal account, I wasn't able to save changes to files that had been restored from a backup or copied from a DVD by the admin user. Nor was I able to use the restored virtual hard disks when setting up virtual machines.

There was a way around this hurdle - copy the file with a slightly different name, shift to my admin account and delete the original file, then switch back to the personal account and rename the copy. So, memo to self for next Windows installation: do all file copies and restorations in the personal account. Friday, December 7, getting the home network up and running. Was that indicative of a failure in the set up process? I still don't know.

After reading the FAQs on the Optus web site, I wasn't a lot wiser, but I decided to add a rule in the firewall configuration which allowed just two 'protocols'? This seemed to dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp the closest match to a process I had to undergo in Zone Alarm in order to allow other PCs in our network to see me.

I also registered my wireless network card as a trusted network adapter. I couldn't see why that wouldn't be the case. And I noticed that Oliver's network card was registered by default, on his laptop, by the same software. A fortnight or so after writing the paragraph above, dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp, it occurred to me that perhaps there was a slight but crucial difference in the names of the work group entered on my laptop and our main dining room desktop.

So I re-entered the name of the work group on the main PC, ensuring that capitals were used for the first letter of each word. That seemed to do the trick, dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp. On the other hand, maybe it was just the process of re-entering the name that "refreshed" the network. Well, you do if you want the spell checker to work. The next step, and perhaps the most crucial, was to restore my missing documents, dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp.

Dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp posed a problem. And I had dell inspiron 8600 drivers download xp intention of reinstalling OneCare. In fact the registry mess created by a succession of different anti-virus and firewall software was precisely the reason I reinstalled Windows. So I decided to restore the OneCare backup to a new folder on one of my daughters' laptops, both of which have OneCare installed. That didn't get very far however.

The restore process isn't flexible or customisable enough for me to restore all backed up files to a new folder. It was everything back to their original location or one file at a time. And I didn't fancy the prospect of overwriting crucial system files on someone else's laptop with my data. A new approach was needed. I discovered that the OneCare backup was organised into 59 separate zip files and that I was able to unzip each of these.

In the end, I simply worked through all 59 files, unzipping each to an 'E' folder - the same file name that appears in the root of each backup zip. That only took about half an hour. This is where Mozy came into play. Mozy is a wonderful service which provides a number of options. The perfect one for my situation was 'Web restore'.
